Indiana University School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed upon graduates of the school. Founded in 1977, the award recognizes alumni who have enhanced the reputation of the school through career achievements, public service, and civic leadership. Two of the five SoE alums recognized on October 23rd are international alums. They are Dr. Shameem Farouk, former Executive Vice President of Digital Capability Development of Maybank, Malaysia’s largest bank, and Dr. KürÅŸat Çağıltay, Dean of the Faculty of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, TED University, Ankara, Türkiye. Hurwitz (SoE) & Maltese’s (SoE) India Journey: Rethinking ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and Belonging | | |
Sarah Hurwitz (Special ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø) and Adam Maltese (Science ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø) made a trip to India in early August, visiting Delhi, Dehradun, and Kerala to learn from educators, officials, and community leaders working to make education more inclusive and responsive to students' needs.
With the support of IU’s Gateway office in Delhi, the two co-hosted an Exploration Circle alongside collaborators from , an educational non-profit. The event, Rethinking the Purpose of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø: Beyond Inclusion, Towards Belonging, examined what it takes to build a more inclusive education system for people with disabilities in both India and in the United States. Before leaving Delhi we connected with IU alum Kshitiz Anand, whose
Trust supports children in India’s poorest states. In Dehradun, we saw Uttarakhand's statewide rollout of the "," or the Happiness Curriculum, a social emotional learning initiative being implemented in 18,000 schools. We then moved to southern India where we visited rural schools near Ponkunnam, in the coastal state of Kerala. A final highlight of the visit was meeting handsome Nelu, the temple elephant at

This was our second trip to India and we hope to continue our partnerships and expand our connections well into the future. | | |

Alexa Brownell & Emily Tack: Global Perspectives on School Psychology at ISPA 2026 |

On July 8–11, 2026, doctoral students Alexa Brownell and Emily Tack presented at the 47th Annual Conference of the International School Psychology Association (ISPA) in Lyon, France. | | | | |
Their travel was supported by the Ochoa-Becker Travel Grant through the School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.
At the conference, they presented research examining U.S. school psychology graduate students’ perspectives and engagement in global school psychology. Together with collaborator and co-author Dr. Emily Srisarajivakul, they engaged with scholars, school psychologists, researchers, and students from around the world. | | |

Kaung Myat’s Ph.D. journey in Literacy, Culture and Language ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø |
|
Kaung Myat (Woody) is a second-year Ph.D. student in Literacy, Culture and Language ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. He gained both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English Literature and Linguistics at Yandanbon University, Burma (Myanmar). | | | | |
Before coming to the United States, he worked as a tutor in the Department of English at Sagaing University of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and later as an assistant lecturer in the Department of English at Lashio University. He came to Indiana University as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA), through which he taught Burmese to American students during the 2021–2022 academic year.
Myat is still teaching the Burmese language at Indiana University-Bloomington and conducting research with the Burmese community in Indianapolis, IN. His research interests include Language Policy and Planning, revitalizing underserved languages, and language-teaching pedagogies. Myat is deeply committed to promoting the literacy development of war-torn people in Burma (Myanmar), and other conflict-affected areas. | | |

Universidad de Chile Scholars Visit the IU School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø | | |
On October 6, four scholars from the Universidad de Chile in Santiago visited the SoE as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. During their visit, they met with Professor Keith Barton of Social Studies and ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø History to explore the structure and development of American Studies programs in the United States and discuss how these models might be adapted to the Chilean academic context.
The visiting scholars were Professors Bywaters Collado, Dockendorff Valdes, Gamboa Valenzuela, and Lopez Varas. IU representatives also included Miguel Ayllon, Seth Walker, Katie Cierniak, and Rojas Valero. The visit provided an opportunity for academic exchange and international collaboration, fostering dialogue on higher education, academic program development, and cross-cultural perspectives. | | |

Oct 16: Treasures of the Silk Road: Dialog and Performance by S. Daneshgar | | |
|
Musician and scholar Dr. Shayar Daneshgar, shared his knowledge, love and passion for a collection of over 70 musical instruments from across Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. They are from the Pastel-Daneshgar collection currently being exhibited in the IU McCalla Center. They include string instruments such as the rubab and bansuri made from organic materials such as wood, snakeskin, horsehair, lambskin, camel bone. These instruments provide insight into the history of the cultural contact and exchanges between travelers from the East and West along the Silk Road. Dr. Daneshgar also performed a few songs using one of the instruments. He is the founder and director of the Bloomington Silk Road Ensemble. | | |

School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Grants
FACULTY
Supports conferences that bring scholars from across the country and around the world together with IU faculty and students to explore new ideas, expand scholarly networks, and develop research and creative activity partnerships. Awards provide up to $10,000 and require a minimum 50% matching contribution. Conferences must be held in Indiana, preferably on or near an IU campus.
Review Deadline: December 4, 2026
The Tobias Center for Innovation in International Development invites proposals for scholarly workshops that advance research in international development. This competitive funding program supports up to two workshops per academic year, bringing together scholars to workshop manuscripts and foster intellectual exchange in core areas of international development.
STUDENTS
Students in the International/Comparative ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø concentration of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Policy Studies Ph.D. program are invited to apply for dissertation or pre-dissertation international travel support. Support for actual dissertation research will be given priority over pre-dissertation research. As stated by the donor, “preference should be given to students who are conducting research on issues of access and equity in education, education and national development, peace studies, global education, and multicultural education.”
Deadline: November 13, 2026
External Grants
FACULTY
Supports recent PhDs in humanities and interpretive social sciences who are developing research and writing projects in China Studies. Long-term fellowships provide $20,000–$45,000 for 4–9 months of research leave, while flexible fellowships provide $15,000 for scholars with significant teaching and service responsibilities. Applicants must be within eight years of receiving their Ph.D. and not hold tenure.
Deadline: November 5, 2026
STUDENTS
Supports U.S. graduate students pursuing long-term study abroad in world regions important to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Fellowships support overseas language study and research, with awards of up to $30,000. Recipients commit to at least one year of federal government service after graduation.
