Summer began with Dean Robert Berry in Indonesia and Singapore. He was in Bandung, Indonesia for the signing of an MOU for a double-degree doctoral program between the SoE and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (Setiabudi, Hardini, Komariah). While in Bandung, Dean Berry also met with Indonesia’s new Head of the Center for Higher ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Scholarship & Assessment, Indonesia Ministry of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (Mihradi). | | |

Nanyang Technical University, SST, & Association for People of Special Needs, Singapore | |

Dean Berry had the opportunity in Singapore to observe how mathematics were taught in two schools (SST & Greendale); to discuss common endeavors with the leadership of the Association for People with Special Needs (Ho); to reconnect with colleagues at the National Institute of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (Liu & Poon); and finally, he met with the new Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (Wilson) at Nanyang Technical University, as well as with alumni (Hsieh & Fang) serving as faculty in the college. Mrs. Michelle Berry and Prof. Faridah Pawan (GIE) accompanied the Dean on the trip. | | |

On July 28, the central leadership of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, led by Rector Sukyadi, Vice-Rector Gaffar and Chairman Disman, paid a return visit to the School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. Hosted by SoE’s Dean Berry and joined by IU Provost Ciorciari, as a special guest, the delegation met with SoE and OVPIA representatives to explore collaboration expansion. | | |
Faculty & Students Spotlight: Jesse Steinfeldt & CASS students in New Zealand | | |
|
Global Gateway has long served the IU SOE student community by providing top notch international training experiences for Teacher ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students. With the recent inception of the Counseling and Student Services (CASS!) Major, Global Gateway is looking to extend these opportunities for CASS students to gain experience in their unique area of the field. The first three CASS students were chosen to be pioneers and explore this opportunity for three weeks in Auckland, New Zealand, at Murrays Bay Intermediate School. To retrofit the infrastructure of this teacher education program onto the counseling and student service needs and skills of CASS students, Undergraduate Director Dr. Jesse Steinfeldt of APERM travelled to New Zealand to visit the site and meet with administrators,
teachers, counselors, and other community stakeholders to explore and clarify the opportunities that exist for CASS students. The trip was a smashing success. Future interns will benefit from this site visit as the partnership between CASS and Global Gateway continues to provide elite international experiences for our SOE students. | | |

Indiana University has a long history of supporting activities related to exchanges with Cuban institutions of higher education, business ventures, cultural institutions, and writers and artists. Founded by Gerardo González, Emeritus Dean of the School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, the has helped to establish Indiana University’s strategic partnership with the Universidad Central—Marta Abreu—of Las Villas (UCLV) in Santa Clara. Since 2015, the Cuba Initiative has funded IU faculty conference travel to Cuba, faculty-led study abroad programs, as well as co-sponsored visits by renowned Cuban Studies scholars.
Jointly sponsored by the IU School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Office of Global and International ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, this CCDI grant initiative supports activities that create community and knowledge around Cuban Studies and the greater Cuban community.
Eligibility: Applicants need to be permanent faculty (tenure-stream or teaching faculty) at Indiana University, Bloomington.
Purpose: Development of activities and/or events related to Cuba and the Cuban Diaspora. Examples of activities include visits by Cuban Studies scholars, Cuban or Cuban diaspora artists, writers, and professionals; support for archival research in Cuba-related domestic or international archives; field research for travel to Cuba (under applicable IU license); and other community fostering events (concerts, exhibits, workshops, etc).
Grant: $1000-3000
Application materials: CV; project description of no more than one page (500 words); detailed budget (one page)
Application deadline: Twice a year (October 1, March 1)

STUDENTS
Funding may be either for students to travel overseas on their own for academic purposes (such as teaching, learning and research) OR to support travel in association with a faculty member (such as assisting in chaperoning a group of students on SoE’s faculty-led overseas short-term studies programs).

OVPIA Grants
FACULTY
Develop a new faculty-led education abroad program with a focus on innovative program models, cross-unit and cross-campus collaborations, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Deadlines: Nov 1 & Feb 1
Visit a current or prospective partner university to strengthen or explore collaboration in teaching, research, or creative activity. There are two tiers of funding: smaller exploratory grants and larger grants to support teams of faculty on collaborative work with colleagues at established partners.
