I am jointly appointed as a professor in the APERM department and as a senior scientist at Within the APERM department, I am a faculty member in the Counseling and Counseling Psychology Programs.

My research interests are in the areas of gender and human sexuality, with a particular focus on investigating experiences of unwanted, coerced, nonconsensual, and exploitative sex. For example, I am interested in:

• better understanding how victims make meaning from and recover following experiences of sexual assault,
• identifying modifiable risk factors for sexual assault perpetration to inform prevention interventions, and
• improving the measurement of sexual exploitation in research and clinical settings.

I am interested in studying experiences of sexual assault and exploitation in diverse populations (e.g., among LGBQ+ individuals; across genders, including men as victims and women as perpetrators; among individuals with disabilities) and in diverse settings (e.g., on college campuses; in public locations, such as on transportation and in nightlife settings; in the workplace; online).

I am a licensed psychologist, and clinically, I have particular interest in sex therapy and treatment of trauma following sexual assault and sexual abuse. I edited the Wiley Handbook of Sex Therapy, which was published in 2017.

I am a Past President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. And I am fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions , , and ) and of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. I am on the editorial board of the Journal of Sex Research.

I am currently open to admitting a doctoral student through the PhD program in Counseling Psychology. I am looking for doctoral students with a strong interest in research. Although I will consider students with research interests in human sexuality, broadly, I am most interested in accepting students who want to study sexual assault/exploitation. Counseling psychology doctoral students who work with me have the option to become student affiliates of the Kinsey Institute as well as to earn a Human Sexuality doctoral minor from the Kinsey Institute.
