Student Emergency Fund

When the unexpected happens, students need someone in their corner

School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students are driven by a shared purpose: to make a difference in the lives of learners and communities. When unexpected challenges arise, they remain determined to continue their education and pursue their goals.

The IU Bloomington School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Student Emergency Fund helps ensure that a temporary financial hardship does not stand in the way of that determination. By providing timely assistance with needs such as medical expenses, lost wages, or housing instability, the fund gives students greater stability so they can stay focused on earning their degree and becoming the educators and leaders our communities need.

During the 2025-26 academic year, $30,362 in emergency funding was awarded to 31 students.

Behind every request for emergency assistance is a student trying to hold on to the future they have worked so hard to build. For one student, help with urgent medical care meant they could recover without stepping away from their program. The fund helped a student living with dental pain receive the care they needed and made it possible for another to return home after the sudden death of a parent while studying abroad. It has also put food back on a student’s table, kept the utilities on, and helped someone afford an essential medication. In each case, support arrived at a deeply personal moment, offering not only practical relief but also the reassurance that someone cared and wanted them to keep going. It’s more than financial support. It’s reassurance that their School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø community believes in them, and that they do not have to navigate a difficult moment alone.

The Student Emergency Fund helped when I had an urgent situation come up and was unable to pay for my rent. If I hadn’t received the grant, I would have been evicted from my house and wouldn’t have been able to finish my school year, which would have put me tremendously behind. I am very thankful that I’m on track to finish my degree.
