Mariah Pol, a 2025 graduate of the Teacher ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and Curriculum Studies program, was awarded the Best Dissertation Award from the Peace ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Special Interest Group of the Comparative and International ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Society at their annual meeting this year in San Francisco.
Pol’s dissertation, entitled “Learning in the Aftermath of a Historical Harm: U.S. Teachers' Peace ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Conceptualizations and Practices Through an International Learning Experience in Northern Ireland,” is a qualitative interpretive case study that follows the experiences of four elementary in-service teachers from a rural school district who traveled to Northern Ireland to learn about peace education. It documents how this experience shaped their understanding of teaching for peace and influenced their subsequent classroom practices.
