Jayla Langford, doctoral student in Higher ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and Student Affairs, has been elected by peers across the United States as Research Coordinator of the 2026-2027 Holmes Scholar Council.
As Research Coordinator, Langford will lead efforts to advance the scholarly mission of the Holmes Scholars Program by supporting research, publications, and conference participation. She will also organize key academic events, oversee funding and evaluation processes, and use data to strengthen scholar engagement and impact. Through coordination and leadership, the role helps build a strong, supportive research community for scholars.
“Becoming a member of the Holmes Council means stepping into a pivotal leadership role within a national organization that champions diversity and inclusion in education,” Langford said. “Not only did I know I would gain invaluable experience being on the Council, but I would also be a vessel and catalyst in shaping the vision of an impactful organization and education. Although I am entering into my dissertation year, I knew this position would allow me to network with peers nationwide on their powerful doctoral program research as well.”
Langford’s research centers on the experiences of Black women in STEM, with particular attention on how their salient identities influence their academic self-confidence and self-love, despite the institutional barriers. Langford currently works as a Graduate Assistant with the (NSSE) Institute. Looking ahead, she aspires to work as a STEM Director for Black women at a university, a Director of Student Belonging, or in the field of Philanthropy, where she can continue advancing equity and access in higher education.
