Over the summer, Dean Robert Berry and Professor Faridah Pawan visited Singapore, where they observed how mathematics is taught and built relationships with people in the special education community.
The visit connects to a larger effort for teachers at the Association for People with Special Needs to expand their ability to work with people who have autism. Associate Professor Sarah Hurwitz’s research focuses on autism, inclusion, and expanding global access to special education, and she said managers at APSN were interested in having their educators complete the School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Graduate Certificate in Autism courses, which are fully online.
Besides sharing the certificate program with the teachers, Hurwitz said there’s a lot for her to learn when it comes to how people with disabilities are taught in Singapore.
“For people in the U.S. with disabilities, the chances of getting employed are low. Once you get out of high school, post-secondary opportunities become more narrow. A lot of autistic young adults don’t have jobs. So I’d love to learn more about how Robin’s organization does their work,” Hurwitz said. “I’m really excited to be able to go there during a conference in January. I’ll get to learn more about how they run their programs.”
