Scholarship encourages alumni to come together to support current students

An alumni-supported scholarship is providing financial support to Indiana University School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students while helping address a teacher shortage across Indiana and the country. A group of past and present members of the IU School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Alumni Board came together to create the , which is awarded annually to undergraduate students. The scholarship leverages the , a special initiative of IU’s that gets scholarship funding to students faster.

“I hope that this scholarship is one action of many that will significantly contribute to our School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø growing its enrollment while recruiting the best and brightest students regardless of their financial status,” said Jim Roberts, President of the Alumni Board.

Jim Roberts, President of the School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Alumni Board

Camille Van Laten was a recipient of the Alumni Board Scholarship before graduating from the School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø last May. Van Laten said the scholarship made a huge difference in her life, calling it “life-changing” as it allowed her to pursue teaching opportunities abroad through Global Gateway for Teachers.

That life-changing funding is personal to Roberts, who was the first in his family to attend college.

“My experiences at IU changed my life trajectory and positively impacted the future of my children,” he said. “After my wife and I attended IU as first-generation college students, with not a lot of financial means, our three daughters now have a combined five postsecondary degrees themselves. All of this leads us to want to do whatever we can to support students who wish to attend the IU School of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.”
